5 Tips to Beating Winter Blues at Work

Kerri Diggle Business Centre, Meeting Efficiency, Productivity 0 Comments

Along with the cold, wet, and often unpleasant weather- winter can also bring changes to our moods and productivity. Less exposure to sunlight, shorter days, and gloomy weather can lead to a case of the “winter blues”, or worse, Seasonal Affective Disorder ( SAD). SAD can cause some serious depression, and if you’re feeling a little more than just the winter blues it might be a good idea to visit a doctor. If you’re in need a pick-me-up at the office to make your winter days a bit brighter, read on…

1. Make Your Desk Brighter
This can be anything from adding a lamp to putting up some sunny images that remind you of summer. Looking forward to getting to the beach when the weather gets warmer? Pin up a photo of your favorite beach by your monitor. You could also add a lamp to your desk, or maybe a string of fairy lights. There are also therapy lights boxes available in different sizes that put out a naturally colored soft light that can really boost your mood and energy during the winter. If you have windows by your desk, make sure to open the shades or blinds to let some natural light come through.
2. Get Outside
On particularly nice days, you can walk to a nearby lunch spot on your break,  or maybe even walk to a brightly lit cafe to get some work done. The change in scenery and better natural light might give you the energy boost you need to increase your productivity. Even if you can’t get out for your entire break, try to go out a few times a day for a few minutes to get some sunlight and fresh air.

3. Brighter Meeting Space
If your company regularly books a meeting room with no windows, maybe change it up. Find a brighter meeting space with some windows and open up the blinds so that everyone can get some light in their life.
4. Healthy Habits
Obviously getting more light into your day is important, but so is getting enough sleep, exercise, and the nutrients your body needs to function properly. Stay hydrated by sipping water without the day. Add some lemon or other citrus to your water for an added nutrient  and flavor boost. Make sure you are taking vitamin D, as during the winter we don’t get enough sunlight to make adequate vitamin D ourselves- so supplementing is a great way to ensure you are getting enough of this vitamin. Eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and make sure you are getting a good amount of sleep each night. Don’t forget about exercise! You should be aiming for at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day. Going for a walk outside gets you your exercise AND your extra sunlight!
5. Shift Your Shifts
If you can, see about maybe starting your work day later or ending it earlier. There’s nothing worse than getting to work when it’s still dark and leaving after the sun goes down. No wonder we are depressed and anxious all day! If you can adjust your shifts to at least have some exposure to the daylight, it can make a huge difference in your mood and energy levels- and therefore your productivity.
Don’t let the winter months ruin your productivity! Between staying hydrated, exercising, eating right, getting more sunlight, taking breaks, and including some fun activities in your days- you should have no problems keeping the winter blues at bay.
